Historical Background

The Matak people have a rich cultural heritage deeply rooted in the Assamese history. They have faced numerous challenges in the past, including land disputes, encroachment, and socio-economic marginalization. The need to protect their identity and secure their rights prompted the formation of the Matak Autonomous Council. The council aims to address the historical injustices and foster sustainable development among the Matak community.

Establishment of the MAC

The Matak Autonomous Council Bill was tabled in the Assam Legislative Assembly on 24 March 2020, reflecting the government’s commitment to the welfare of indigenous communities. The bill was passed in September 2020, receiving unanimous support from all political parties, including the opposition. This bipartisan approach demonstrated the collective recognition of the Matak people’s rights and the necessity for their inclusive development.

Our Primary Objective

The primary objective of the Matak Autonomous Council is to ensure the overall development and protection of the Matak people residing in Assam. The council aims to safeguard their cultural heritage, promote education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, and address the issues of land rights and social justice. By decentralizing power and decision-making, the MAC enables the Matak community to actively participate in the governance and policymaking processes that directly impact their lives.
